Welcome!
I’m Geoffrey W. Sutton, retired psychologist, professor, and writer with a lifelong interest in how people think, believe, and make meaning. Born in London, England I earned a PhD in psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I completed postdoctoral studies in neuropsychology and psychopharmacology, work that deepened my understanding of the brain, behavior, and the biological foundations of mental health. I spent many years as a clinician and professor before becoming an Emeritus Professor of Psychology.
Today I write about the themes that have shaped my career—psychology, religion and spirituality, wellbeing, culture, and the ways language reflects who we are. My books range from guides to survey design and statistics to explorations of religious experience and the quirks of British–American slang. The recent book on the SCOPES model brings together six dimensions of human functioning to help readers understand flourishing in a deeper, more integrated way.
When I’m not writing or consulting, I enjoy traveling, exploring cultural and historical sites, and spending time with my grandchildren.
